1st Ascension Island Scouts - Summer Trip 2000

Week 5- Report 5

Tuesday 5th September.

Sunday 27th August
We were all up at 0530hrs, and left the Portsteward Scout hall at our scheduled time, 0600hrs bound for Belfast City Airport. The flight to London Gatwick left at 0850hrs. We arrived at Gatwick, and got on two minibuses with all the baggage and headed for Reading. We dumped all the baggage at the Reading Scout Hall that was kindly arranged for the group to spend the night in, then headed for the Reading St. Helenian Sports grounds. There were relations and friends met by all during the afternoon, then we spent the night back at the Reading Scout Hall for some well earned rest!
Monday 28th August
We piled all the baggage back on the buses again, and went to London, Baden Powel House. We arrived about lunchtime, and booked in. During the afternoon we went for a look around the Natural History Museum (next door) and then during the evening went to watch a short film in London's IMAX Cinema. This was a screen about 22 meters by 18 meters, with Dolby Digital Surround Sound System.
Tuesday 29th August
We were met by two representatives from the FCO, who helped with some organisation. In the morning we went on a 'Frog Tour' a tour around the center on London and part of the Thames River! Yes, these vehicles were amphibious! We then went to visit the London Dungeon, and then a look around HMS Belfast. We finished the day with a walk across London Bridge.

Wednesday 30th August
Morning - we went to watch the ceremony for the Changing Of The Guards at Buckingham Palace. The FCO reps had arranged for us to be on the inside of the fenced area to get a good view! We then spent the rest of the day at the Dome.
Thursday 31st August
The FCO reps had organised a tour around the Houses of Parliament and the FCO Office. Now the next time that the news shows scenes from Parliament, we all can relate to the rooms.

We then managed to get a photo with the Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, at No 10 Downing street! This was a bonus because at the most we wanted a photo-shoot at the door of No 10!

During the afternoon we had a very nice tea and nibbles with Mr. John White and his team. During the evening we went to a theatre and watched Starlite Express - enjoyed by all!

Friday 1st September
Most of the morning was spent with the London Eye! We were booked in for a 'ride' at 10:00hrs, and went a little later whilst awaiting for a photographer to arrive, which was excellent because the weather had improved and we got an amazing view of London from the top of the Eye.

We then visited the Aquarium, which was conveniently next to the Eye. The afternoon was spent in the Planetarium and Madame Tussauds.

Saturday 2nd September
We spent the morning at Trafalgar Square, then shopping at the biggest toy shop in London, Hamleys. And, when finished at Hamleys we went to Carnaby Street shopping. There was a lot of money handed over for various goods…… During the evening we went to Leister Square for dinner and then we all went to watch one of two films, the older ones Gladiator, and the younger ones Mama's House.

Sunday 3rd September
We had a lazy day. We started late and went to the London Zoo for the rest of the day. Then we went for dinner at a Garfunkals. A great meal and evening.
Monday 4th September
Time to pack the bags once again! When these were packed we went to Carnaby Street for some final shopping, and then had lunch in Trafalgar Square. It was then time to get everything back on the buses and up to Brize Norton. We arrived and checked in, had a meal at the Gateway Hotel and prepared for the flight. Everybody was well tired by this stage, so the flight passed relatively quickly! Tuesday Morning - Arrived Ascension with parents welcoming their children back to Ascension….. There were complaints from the neighbors that the island was far too quiet!

The Scouts have now returned to Ascension Island. We hope you've enjoyed reading about the Scouts as much as we have on the island. A final wrap-up report will hopefully be issued later.
