1st Ascension Island Scouts - Summer Trip 2000

Week 4 - Report 4

Sunday 27th August.

The Scouts were returned to the Scout hall on Tuesday evening after spending the weekend with the Portstewart Scouts' parents. They all had a great weekend, visiting various parts and some of the Scouts even went to Belfast. The leaders went off shopping and sightseeing during the weekend and making arrangements for the rest of the trip. Tuesday evening was spent in the Scout hall after all the Scouts were delivered. Everybody talked about what they had done over the weekend - some of them had arranged to get together and do things in groups.
Wednesday - The whole Troop was up early, got breakfast and we then set off for Belfast for some ice-skating. There were some spectacular stunts from the Scouts as they went around the rink! Part of the Troop challenge's was to fall down whilst ice-skating, and believe me they did it in style! But, they all came away without anything broken.

We had a quick lunch in MacDonald's close by, and then there was a game of Phaser Laser set-up in the same complex as the ice rink. A long drive back to Portstewart, and after dinner the Scouts went around the Promenade until bedtime.
Thursday - We had a late breakfast and we then went to the Strand Beach (about two miles long) and had a sandcastle competition. There were some great designs, until the tide came in!
We had lunch on the beach, and then a few wide games and football in the sand dunes behind the beach before coming back for dinner. After dinner we went to Coleraine Leisure centre and played a game of 10-pin bowling - some good scores here as well! Then the Scouts spent an hour on the Promenade before going to bed.

Friday - The morning was spent cleaning up a little in preparations for leaving. After lunch the younger scouts went to Portrush Dunlose centre for various excursions, whilst the older ones were told they needed to go back to the campsite to tidy the campfire and toilet areas! There were a lot of long faces, but all the older Scouts went without moaning. When we got there the Scouts got out of the vehicles ready to go and tidy the campsite. Then Johnny burst out laughing and told them all to get back into the vehicles.................
.........And then took them to a Gliding Club! There were a lot of mixed expressions on their faces, but they were all prepared to give it a go. There were some big smiles on each of their faces as they emerged from the cockpits. I think that we could hear Geordie screaming from 2500 feet as he did two loops straight after the other!
After dinner there was a Scout meeting with the Portstewart Scouts, and we completed the games that we couldn't during the camp so that the winners could be announced and the medals given out. This was the last time that both Troops would be together, so the official goodbyes were said and thanks given to the Portstewart Scouts, leaders and families. The Scouts then spent an hour on the Promenade before going to bed.

Saturday - was spent packing the entire luggage in preparation for the flight on Sunday to England. We need to leave Portstewart at 6am for the coach trip to Belfast City Airport, so all the cleaning and packing needs to be completed this evening. All the goodbyes were said as this would be the last time we would be seeing the wonderful people of Portstewart.

More next week.
