1st Ascension Island Scouts - Summer Trip 2000
Sunday 20th August.
| Monday - All were up early with a quick breakfast and preparations for camp were underway. The Portstewart Scouts started arriving around 8 am and everybody was doing something with preparations for the day. We started moving the kits up to the campsite, Down Hill forest. The site was on top of a small hill; the access up the hill being muddy meant that we had to carry all the kit 50 metres up the hill. The rest of the day was spent pitching tents, setting up kitchens, gathering firewood, etc. | ![]() |

Tuesday - The weather was kind enough to allow activities to be carried out today. There were four scout patrols made up of one patrol 1st Ascension and one patrol 1st Portstewart each. Each patrol did something different; orienteering, hiking, mystery walking (below) and cooking. The evening was a little cold so we had a large campfire and practiced the songs for the final night. |
| Wednesday - There were a few scattered showers during the morning, but during the evening we managed to do more activities, the same as Tuesday, but the patrols moving around to the ones they had not completed. One patrol also did Horse Riding in between the showers (photos below). | ![]() |

Thursday - Once again in the morning, there were scattered showers and everybody gathered in the marquee tent to play games out of the rain. The rain showed no signs of easing, so we moved to a school hall in Limavady and played indoor football whilst some people grabbed a shower. During the late afternoon, in between showers, we managed to get the other three patrols on the horse riding. One of the patrols managed to get in the middle of a rain shower and looked rather wet and cold at the end of it! After dinner there were some games of football, volleyball and wide games before having a relatively early night for the work of breaking camp in the morning. |
| Friday - We had breakfast, and the weather had improved considerably - there was a light shower, but then the sun came out. We took advantage of this sunshine, and took down the tents and moved the gear back to Portstewart. We had a late lunch, and then it was time for the Portstewart scout's parents to come and collect them, and the extra Ascension Scouts they very kindly agreed to take in for a few days to allow them some rest and recover from the camp in a nice homely environment. So by about 5pm all the Ascension Scouts were with Portstewart families. The leaders retired to Johnny's place for a shower and a good night's sleep! | ![]() |

The scouts are spending the next few days with their temporary parents until Tuesday evening when they will be returned to the Scout Hall again.
Spirits are all high with no problems.
More next week.
