1st Ascension Island Scouts - Summer Trip 2000

Week 1 - Report 1

Monday 7th August 2000

The flight left on time Saturday night, 5th August - we were off to a good start for the long trip ahead. Thanks to the efficiency in the team of RAF and SERCo personnel at the airhead, the scouts were all checked in and raring to go!

The Royal Air Force Tristar about to depart Ascension Island

They were settled into their seats and looked after just as well by the Tristar crew. Some of the scouts managed to get tours of the flight deck even! Another big thank you to the crew of the Tristar.

Arriving in Ireland

Late breakfast on Monday!

Baggage was collected at Brize Norton, emigration was sorted - no problems so far as phase one of this journey was completed. Now, phase two! Baggage was transferred to a coach and by 9am we were off own the A40 heading towards Scotland. A few stops along the way, and at approximately 6:30pm we were at Cairnryan. Phase two now completed, time to start phase three. From here we transferred to a ferry with a 2.5 hour journey to Belfast N.Ireland. This gave us time to 'refuel' our bodies. At the other end there were two mini buses and a van to transfer all of us and baggage to Port Steward scout hall. We arrived finally at midnight on Sunday!

Late breakfast on Monday!

Buses were unloaded and bedding sorted for the night - there was only one thing on everybody's minds - decent sleep!

Monday was a strange day - we all slept in and had breakfast at lunchtime. Not much happened today, as we were all busy sorting out the scout hall and getting food in. The scouts spent the afternoon touring around the Promenade of Port Stewart and then after dinner we all went to Barrys amusements for a roller coaster ride and others.

More next week.
